Resume Preparation Tips

Tip 1: Review the job's minimum credentials and, if relevant, the preferred criteria, so that you can address them in your resume.

When preparing your resume, remember that all job posts in MCG's online job application system include minimum certifications that you require to meet in order for your online application to be evaluated. If your resume indicates that you do not meet the job's minimum credentials, your application will not be thought about.

In many cases, the job publishing will list preferred criteria. It remains in your best interest to include all appropriate preferred criteria in your resume. During the online qualification and evaluation area of the task application process, you will be asked to deal with these preferred criteria. Your online responses ought to follow the favored criteria you consist of in your resume.

Tip 2: Review the job's Classification Specification.

The Montgomery County Government Classification Plan consists of general descriptions relating to the numerous types of positions available within MCG. Reading the task's classification specification should offer you a better understanding of the task.

Tip 3: Ensure your resume consists of the following details:

- Your name, address, telephone number and e-mail address
- An objective (brief the position desired).
- Your education level: - Name of the institute and degree earned (High School, GED, High School Certificate of Completion, Associate's Degree, Bachelor's Degree, Masters' Degree, PHD, JD, and so on).
- Variety of credit hours made if no degree was obtained (note that sometimes year is very important); refer to Equivalencies for Education and Experience.

- Title of position held.
- Month and year the position started/ended.
- Whether you were operating in a full-time or part-time capacity.
- List of duties and duties related to each position

- List of languages you speak with complete confidence (other than English); note that, depending on the position, department operational requirements, and customers served, the County will provide workers who are bi-lingual with additional pay (Multilingual Pay Differential)

Tip 4: Do not send paper resumes or lengthy resumes.

All resumes need to be uploaded online as part of the application process. Faxed or emailed resumes are declined. It is best to keep your resume under five pages. You do not need to upload a cover letter with your resume, however if you wish to do so, integrate it with your resume and submit them as one file.
